Monkeys in a cage…
Download the full article here I am writing this just at the beginning of February. It's a funny old time of the year - many will have set out a month ago full of good intentions about changes they were going to make in life and in business. Some may now be feeling that some of those good intentions are slipping as we revert back into our old ways and bad habits. But it is possible to make changes - and you don't have to wait until next New Year's eve to do it! One of the first things that needs to be done is taking a close look at our routines, our assumed beliefs and our learned - and accepted - behaviour and to make changes we sometimes need to challenge these.... To illustrate this I'm going to use an age-old cautionary tale of monkeys in the cage… First of all put...

Be brilliant at what you do
Download the full article here Several years ago, a leading pub group commissioned some really good research to look at what encourages and discourages customers to or from their premises. They divided their findings under the headings of Quality Enhancers and Quality Destroyers. The top two enhancers were to do with smell – “the faint aroma of an open coal or log fire” and “the smell of fresh coffee”. Customers were more likely to eat and spend more in a pub with these characteristics. The top destroyers were – “smelly loos” and “the smell of fried food” plus “sticky tables and menus” Unsurprisingly, NOBODY ate in these pubs. It’s so often these obvious small details that define the difference between success and failure in business. Now...

Discover your brilliance and then be brilliant…
Download the full article Is your business THE ONE? When writing these short briefings, we’re careful to try and strike a sensible balance between realism and optimism. We think it is important to accept that even if the current economic uncertainty isn’t yet affecting your business it is certainly affecting some of your customers and suppliers AND some of your competitors. The most important thing (And we’ve said this before) is to be the best at what you do, it’s important that your business is set up so that you’re THE most respected in your market sector; the company most trusted by customers and most envied by competitors. Think about your business for a moment and imagine it as an animal - what do you want it to be? A lion? A gazelle? A killer whale? What ever...

Discover Your Narrow Edge
Download the full article here How unremarkable actions executed with remarkable consistency will deliver remarkable results… Thanks for taking a few moments out to read this. As always, we’re really appreciative of your time, so have prepared this bulletin to take no more than a couple of minutes to read – it’s likely, though, that you’ll reflect on the content for far longer… It’s very tempting, to think that you can save time and cut corners in your business, believing that you’ll have time to “start doing them properly” later on when the business grows. Developing good habits from the very beginning will have a more significant effect on where you end up than you might imagine. In the early days, the narrow competitive edge gained from “doing...

Is your business as solid as Religion?
In this edition of Something for the weekend we’re going to break a taboo and discuss religion. Like it, love it or loathe it, religion is all around us. Don’t let anyone steal your dream…
It’s usual at this time of year to take stock and look to the coming year ahead and make resolutions and goals. I’d really like to delve a little deeper and just urge you to have a think about your dreams….and ask you what yours are? Dreams are the ‘why’ we do things, they are what motivate us; and very often dreams are what made you start your business in the first place… I hope that you can remember why it was you started your business – and what was your vision back then? Was it to provide you and your family with security? Was it a bright idea that you had and could see a gap in the market? Did you drift into a family business perhaps? Whatever your story – I’m pretty sure you will have had some kind of dream or vision of the future, and I’m also pretty...

Mapping the DNA of your business
Business owners often think that they need to take dramatic steps to improve the profitability of their business. Many believe, for example, that if they want to double their profits they need to double their sales, or take on more people (bringing with them, many more headaches). This doesn’t have to be the case. The steps can be small and the differences slight….but they can have a big effect. Did you know that the difference between the DNA of a chimpanzee and a human is only 2% but what a difference that makes! 2% less and you are learning how to crack open a nut – 2% more and you can fly a rocket to the moon. So what’s the DNA of your business? You may be surprised to find that there is very little difference between a successful and an unsuccessful business. To...
