Be brilliant at what you do

Several years ago, a leading pub group commissioned some really good research to look at what encourages and discourages customers to or from their premises.

They divided their findings under the headings of Quality Enhancers and Quality Destroyers.

The top two enhancers were to do with smell – “the faint aroma of an open coal or log fire” and “the smell of fresh coffee”.

Customers were more likely to eat and spend more in a pub with these characteristics.

The top destroyers were – “smelly loos” and “the smell of fried food” plus “sticky tables and menus”

Unsurprisingly, NOBODY ate in these pubs.

It’s so often these obvious small details that define the difference between success and failure in business.

Now is a good time to think about the enhancers and destroyers in your business – you can do your own research. Send this email to a selection of your customers or to your staff and ask them to read this section and then to give you some feedback on your business. Make sure you ask them to be brutally honest; the truth helps us be better.

Finally, remember to take the criticism well – there is no point asking and then being defensive, even if it hurts!

By far the best piece of work written on this subject, in our opinion, is Dr. Paddi Lund’s book ‘The Absolutely Critical Non-Essentials’. If you’ve not come across this inspiring piece of work, I will be happy to send you a summary prepared by a friend and colleague Jim Reynolds.

Thank you as always for taking the time to read this and we hope you’ve found it to be valuable — feel free to email us with any thoughts or topics you’d like us to cover in future bulletins.
